The lead is actually Michael Douglas, a scumbag cop investigating a serial killer.

The Conversation (1974)

This tense thriller from Francis Ford Coppola stars Gene Hackman as a surveillance expert. As he gathers data for his clients, he starts to suspect that they have turned against him. Is he right, or is he just being paranoid – the quality that makes him so good at his job in the first place. The Killing (1956)

This classic, written and directed by Stanley Kubrick, keeps viewers on the edge of their seats as we witness an ex-con (Sterling Hayden) getting out of prison and quickly returning to his life of crime. He puts together a team to pull of the heist, all of which must wear clown masks on the day to protect their identity from everyone, including each other. Of course, things rarely go according to plan.

Overlord (2018)

At the risk of giving away the biggest twist of the film, this starts out as a World War II movie, but quickly descends into something very different. Jovan Apedo stars as Boyce, a young solider sent with his team to destroy a radio tower behind enemy lines. As the infiltrate the small French town where the tower is located, they soon discover that the Nazis have been carrying out some pretty horrific experiments on the local residents.

Primal Fear (1996)

Starring Richard Gere as the lawyer of former altar boy Edward Norton, this movie has it all: murder, a possibly innocent man on trial, sexual abuse within the church, serious mental disorders. All these factors are interwoven perfectly to give you something where you just aren’t sure who the bad guy is.

The Report (2019)

This slow-burn thriller tells the story of the CIA’s attempts to cover up details of the disturbing torture methods used by the US on prisoners suspected of terrorism after the 9/11 attacks. Adam Driver plays a staffer to a senator, played by Annette Bening, tasks with investigating the torture methods. What starts out as a run of the mill tasks soon becomes an obsession for Driver’s character, despite pressure to leave it alone.

Thief (1981)

One of Michael Mann’s most underrated films, this 1980s classic stars a young(ish) James Caan as Frank, a master crook that runs several legitimate businesses to cover for his more illicit activities. Having met the right woman, he now wants to leave his criminal life behind, but he has to pull off one last job in order to get out from underneath a menacing crime boss. Naturally, nothing goes according to plan (John Wick for the 1980s).

Witness (1985)

While Harrison Ford might be exploiting his action star past with cameos in Disney’s take on Star Wars and new episodes of Indiana Jones, this is where Ford shows off his true acting chops! He is a police officer who must go to great lengths to protect a young boy who has witnessed a crime, hiding with him in an Amish community. But both his and the community’s morals are put to the test when the boy is discovered.

You Were Never Really Here (2107)

IMDB Score 6.8/10

Joaquin Phoenix turns in one more compelling performance in this Lynne Ramsey film, this time as a Vietnam war veteran, who can no longer trust his own mind, and who also happens to be a deadly hitman. What is real, and what is all in his head is for the audience to work through. The staked are upped when he is hired to save the daughter of a senator from a sex slave ring, or at least he thinks he is.

Zodiac (2007)

The Zodiac Killer, who killed many people in the Bay Area and also sent puzzles to the newspaper to intrigue the public about his identity, has never been caught. This film, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Robert Downey Jr, looks at the newspapermen who were the target of the killer’s interest, and who were obsessed with discovering the killer’s identity, no matter what it cost them.
