Whenever I am in the mood for a new movie, but I don’t really know what I am interested in at the moment, I look at what is popular on Netflix. Sometimes I am very surprised, movies that I never imagined often show up on the list. But with 50 to 80 million people tuning in to these flicks, they must be good right (especially, since unlike the cinema, walking out is totally easy and allowed).
Find out for yourself, with this list of the 10 most popular original movies on Netflix of all time (back-catalog will need to be another post!). At least for now. It will be interesting to see how these numbers change after the upsurge in subscriptions and streaming following the COVID-19 quarantine.
These numbers are from the end of 2019, the most recent period for when numbers are available. We are expecting to see a lot of new entries soon.
Always Be My Maybe (2019)
Ali Wong wrote and stars in this film about a successful woman who goes back home and reconnects with her childhood love. While they have a connection, she can’t see that it is more than that, largely because she is dating Keanu Reeves – so that is understandable. A documentary film about the Fyre Festival, one of the most expensive and lavish festivals that has ever been planned, but because of a series or organizational disasters, also just never happened. The documentary looks at the fraud that surrounded the festival, and shares that moment when one of the organizers agreed to sexual favors just to get things moving.
The Highwaymen (2019)
Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson star as two former Texas Rangers brought back in from retirement to try to track down Bonnie and Clyde in the 1930s. It mixes the thrill of the chase with these two old hands revealing their individual histories and problems. While the film can get a little procedural, it is a nice new twist on the old story.

One for the ladies, Patricia Arquette, Angel Bassett, and Felicity Huffman star as three suburban mothers whose children live in New York and are suffering from empty nest syndrome. So, they decide to go to visit their kids on an unannounced visit. How much trouble could they get into? Quite a bit it seems, even if critics didn’t think it was overly interesting trouble.

Triple Frontier (2019)
There was so much marketing around this flick that it is little surprise that it was a hit. It focusses on a group of former US. Army Delta Force soldiers who reunite for a heist job in South America, each returning to the region for their own reasons. Starring Ben Affleck, Oscar Isaac, and Garrett Hedlund, this action flick would have worked well on the big screen as well.
