Amazon officially renews ‘Modern Love’ for a second season

‘Modern Love’ has been one of the hit shows of the fall season in a widely-unexpected way. When Amazon announced the project, it seemed like an intelligent but modest bet. An anthology show featuring a different love story in every episode sounded like the kind of show that would build a strong fan base, but without much mainstream recognition.

Well, we were wrong. After a premiere last Friday, the show has a 76% score among critics, and 94% among viewers on Rotten Tomatoes and has received tons of attention on Social Media.

This has led Amazon to immediately give John Carney another go: they’ve tabbed John Carney to an overall deal and renewed the show for a second season of more half-hour heartwarming love stories. Carney adds his success with ‘Modern Love’ to an already-impressive resume that had ‘Sing Street’ and ‘Once’ in it.

“Being given a green light to proceed with Modern Love is a great opportunity for us to continue to tell stories of love while opening up the series into new cities and worlds. The possibilities are truly endless,”  said Carney on Thursday in a statement. “Subsequent seasons can really branch out and dig deep into what it means to love in this complicated world. It’s incredible news for everyone involved in the series, and we are dizzy with possibilities moving forward.”

The show, based on the New York Times’ popular column has an astonishing bunch of stars in its cast, including Anne Hathaway, Dev Patel, Tina Fey, Andy García, Julia Garner, Andrew Scott, and Catherine Keener.

“Since its debut just last week, the reaction to Modern Love from viewers has been incredible. It’s a show with so much emotion and warmth — every episode touches the heart in a different way,” said Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios. “We’re so excited we’ll be able to bring our global Prime Video customers more of the beautiful stories of romance, friendship, and family from Modern Love.”
