Looking for the best free to play PS4 games that don’t require PS+ to play? Check out this list of completely free to play PlayStation 4 games. There’s no upfront price and no subscription fees, though some games do feature microtransactions.
Games mentioned in this listicle:
15. Fallout Shelter
Fallout Shelter is available on PS4 and Nintendo Switch for free. The game originally launched as a free-to-play mobile game, but there’s tons of fun to be had. Bethesda did an amazing job translating the touch-based interface for controller use, so the game doesn’t feel like a hassle to play.
Since the game is free to play, it does feature microtransactions, but these can be pretty much ignored if you are a patient gamer. The microtransactions in the game are all centered around speeding up wait times of quests in the wasteland. That’s immersion breaking if you want to feel like you’re managing an iconic Fallout vault and its residents.
14. DC Universe Online
The long-running DC Universe Online MMORPG is available on PlayStation 4. The game is over seven years old, so it’s not the best-looking game on this list. It is worth checking out if you’re a comic book fan and want to explore the world of DC Comics. You can explore pretty much the entire game for free, with new update and content releasing on a regular schedule.
Want to play Super Smash Bros. but don’t have a Nintendo Switch? Brawlhalla is basically Super Smash Bros. lite, making it a great PS4 game to play online for free.
You’ll master Vikings, Knights, Valkyries, and even Gangsters in a 2D game that will feel very familiar to Smash Bros. players. A limited selection of characters rotates for free, so playing each week yields new characters to master.
Neverwinter is an MMORPG based on the Dungeons & Dragons ruleset. The action RPG can be played with others, re-creating the classic MMORPG experience. The best part about Neverwinter is the user-generated content, which has gotten good over the years.
The game is free to play with no PlayStation Plus subscription needed. However, the microtransaction model in the game is really pay to win, and free players will quickly run up against several paywalls. Bearing that in mind, Neverwinter is an excellent MMORPG experience on PS4.
The PC version of Hawken recently shut down, but the PS4 version is alive and well. The massive mech battle arena game is no longer getting updated, but it is still fun to play if you have a PS4. Control massive mechs in online co-op or competitive battles. Each of the mechs feels different enough that you’ll want to pick one to focus and master.
10. H1Z1 Battle Royale
The popular online survival game H1Z1 got its own battle royale spin-off after the wild success of Fortnite. The game straddles a middle-ground between the silliness of Fortnite and the seriousness of PUBG. The result is a battle royale game that feels competitive, but also accessible.
You don’t need a PS+ subscription for the battle royale mode, which receives new updates every week.
9. Realm Royale
Ream Royale is the newest battle royale game on the block from the developers of Smite and Paladins. The game’s fantasy-take on the genre feels like a breath of fresh air. The stand-out feature for Realm Royale is getting chickened, giving you a chance to survive your downing. If you can successfully evade your killer as a chicken for ten seconds, you get your weapons back.
Realm Royale is also one of the only battle royale games to feature class-based gameplay. The only downside to this game is it is still considered in beta, so it is changing nearly daily.
8. Let It Die
Sudo 51’s take on Dark Souls as a free to play game where you pay for resurrections. If you like the hack-n-slash gameplay of Dark Souls, definitely give Let It Die a download. The game world is unique, and the multiplayer mechanic is interesting.
Uncle Death guides you into the world to get you used to paying for resurrections, which serves as Let It Die’s microtransactions. You can both purchase death metals and earn them after special events.
The first two chapters of IO Interactive’s spy adventure are available for free. Also included are two escalation contracts, 40 challenges, and PS4 trophies to earn. Several times a year, the developers make missions free for all players. As long as you have the free version of Hitman downloaded, you can play these free levels while they are available. The Hitman 2 prologue is available as a free download to prep you for the second game.
A free to play clone of Monster Hunter’s gameplay, Dauntless is a must-play game for anyone with a PS4. You can chase all kinds of behemoths across the Shattered Isles, killing them to level up your character and play style. The game also features four-player co-op so you can take on behemoths with friends.
Love the way Overwatch plays but don’t want to buy it? See Hi-Rez’s Paladins, which feels like a clone but isn’t. Paladins has a healthy dose of difference, but you’ll find several characters have Overwatch counterparts. It’s a great free to play hero shooter on PS4 that shouldn’t be ignored if you like playing FPS games.
Smite is a hybrid mixture of third-person action game and MOBA, which lends to a seriously fun game. Out of all the MOBA games to release in the last few years, I have spent the most time with Smite. Players assume the role of mythical gods from mythologies around the world. Free gods are available on a rotating basis, but you can purchase all current and future gods for one price.
Fortnite is all the rage with young gamers and–for a good reason–the battle royale mode is extremely fun to play. Fortnite is the hottest free multiplayer game right now, thanks to its easy presentation and refined gameplay. The building defense in the final moments adds to the tension.
2. Apex Legends
Apex Legends takes the movement system from Titanfall 2 and combines that with a hero shooter battle royal. The result is a game that feels amazing to play, despite being a rehash of the battle royale genre. The game also introduced a ping system for communicating with teammates, even if you don’t have a mic.
Ninjas in space is the best way to describe Warframe. Digital Extremes has been hard at work on the game for nearly ten years, and it shows. Warframes are loadouts you can acquire in the game, giving you an entirely new set of abilities. Players complete quest chains and learn more of the story as they unlock new frames.
