Best Movies on HBO Max You Can Watch This Weekend

HBO Max has a vast library of notable titles that you can go through and choose a fantastic movie to watch this weekend. With HBO Max, you can watch great movies that include classics, new releases, indie films, and all of your favorite superhero flicks. HBO Max is the latest streaming launch from WarnerMedia, so they will be stacking their libraries even more to attract a broader audience.

With over 600 movies listed on the platform, you may be a little overwhelmed with what to choose. Here are a few of our favorites that you should watch this weekend.

Cast: Anya Taylor-Joy, Johnny Flynn, Josh O’Connor, and Callum Turner

Director: Autumn de Wilde

Emma is the newest adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel Emma. The movie follows a young woman around England who decided to meddle in the personal lives of her family and friends and turns into a matchmaker of sorts. Breakout star Anya Taylor-Joy plays Emma, and director Autumn de Wilde does an amazing job at telling a story that might have already been heard.

Doctor Sleep

Cast: Ewan McGregor, Rebecca Ferguson, and Kyleigh Curran

Director: Mike Flanagan

Doctor Sleep is the sequel to The Shining, and although it is scary, it falls a little more into the horror-drama section. The story follows a young Danny Torrance as a grown man that is struggling with both PTSD and alcoholism that stems from this time at the Overlook Hotel. A cult leader, played by Rebecca Ferguson, is murdering and sucking the life force from children and Danny is the one who makes the connection to his past. The film has a good buildup and fans of The Shining will love this sequel.

Jojo Rabbit

Cast: Roman Griffin Davis, Thomasin McKenzie, Scarlett Johansson, and Rebel Wilson

Director: Taika Waititi

Jojo Rabbit won the 2020 Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay, and it will take you on an emotional rollercoaster. The film is funny, sad, and has a lot of anti-hate satire that will leave you feeling some type of way. The film is shot from the viewpoint of a ten-year-old boy that lives in Germany towards the end of World War II. The child is an aspiring Nazi that has an imaginary friend Hitler, but his whole world changes when a young Jewish girl is being hidden in his own house.

La La Land

Cast: Emma Stone, Ryan Gosling, Rosemarie Dewitt, and John Legend

Director: Damien Chazelle

La La Land is an Oscar-winning musical that is vibrant and colourful but don’t be fooled since it is a drama. The film is set in modern-day LA and tells a love story between an aspiring actress and jazz musician, played by Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling. The two meet, fall in love, and have a decision to choose between their dreams and relationship. The story is emotional, but it is a great story to watch.

Wonder Woman

Cast: Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Robin Wright, and Danny Huston

Director: Patty Jenkins

Wonder Woman follows an Amazonian into World War I as she goes from hunting a God of War to attempting to bring peace to humankind. She falls for a pilot, played by Chris Pine, and has to deal with the world in both its beauty and terror. Patty Jenkins did a fantastic job of bringing their DC comic to life. Keep an eye out for the sequel as well.

The Wizard Of Oz

Cast: Judy Garland, Frank Morgan, Ray Bolger, and Bert Lahr

Director: Victor Fleming and King Vidor

If you haven’t seen the original Wizard Of Oz, you need to watch it now. The story follows a young girl, played by Judy Garland, who is from Kansas and is whisked into the magical world of Oz. There she has to join forces with a brainless Scarecrow, heartless Tin Man, and a cowardly Lion to find her way home but also help save Oz from the Wicked Witch and her flying army of monkeys. Although the film was released in 1939, it is still good to watch today.

Cast: Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, and Frances Conroy

Director: Todd Philips

We’ve seen a lot of different Joker movies, but this has been the most popular thus far. The film is nothing like the comic. The movie follows Arthur, who can never catch a break and wants to be seen. He thinks the best way to do that is to murder and cause mayhem to achieve his goals. The movie shows the wrong part of life and dips into mental illness a little bit.

HBO Max is an excellent streaming service to invest in and find a great movie to watch over the weekend. These seven were just a few that jumped out at us as a must-watch, but their library is filled with an array of great films that are begging to be watched. Settle in and spend a weekend enjoying some fantastic movies.
