Zombie games are a dime a dozen these days, so we wanted to highlight the best zombie games on any platform. Whether you love your zombies fast and scary or slow and methodical, there’s something on this list for everyone. Best of all, most of these games have co-op of some variety so you can bring a friend along for the ride.
Project Zomboid is still an Early Access zombie game, but it has been in active development for over eight years. The old school isometric presentation really lends something to running around town from the massive hordes. The whole goal is to see how long you can survive. Forum records are around 120 days, will you make it that long?
Death Road to Canada
Death Road to Canada is a road-trip game similar to The Oregon Trail. Players kick off a desparate roadtrip from Florida to Canada, with plenty of zombie-infested stops along the way. The game is a rogue-lite in that many aspects of each run are randomly generated. Each survivor comes with a variety of stats that can influence how well a run goes for you.
Platform: XB1/PS4/PC/Wii U
London has fallen and the dead have risen. As a survivor of The Last Blight, your task is to find refuge in this hellish new world. Death is permanent, so be extra careful as you explore the remnants of that supermarket. You never know what is lurking for you just around the corner. Check your six.
Dead Rising 4
Dead Rising 4 has massive crowds of zombies to fight with a friend. Take control of Frank West from the original trilogy and fight with plenty of over-the-top created weapons. There’s plenty of crazy weapons to create as you mow your way through the living dead.
Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare
RDR: Undead Nightmare is a standalone expansion for the first Red Dead Redemption. An entirely new zombie-themed single-player campaign is available, including two new multiplayer modes. The alternate timeline sees protagonist John Marston seeking the cause for a zombie plague that has taken his wife and son.
Zombies Ate My Neighbors
Zombies Ate My Neighbors is an old classic developed by LucasArts for the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis systems. The game first released in 1993, but the gameplay holds up and is still fun today. Players take control of Zeke and Julie in co-op play as they seek to destroy monsters from horror movies. Many weapons and power-ups are available to collect in each level.
Zombie Army Trilogy
From the creators of the Sniper Elite series is the Zombie Army Trilogy. At the end of WW2, Hitler unleashes a legion of undead on the world. Players can fight against the Nazi undead alone or with up to four friends. Each game has a campaign and 15 missions full of Nazi zombies to slay.
Left 4 Dead 2
Left 4 Dead 2 is an amazing co-op experience that includes all of the maps from the original Left 4 Dead. Experience the horror of being alone with special infected as you traverse zombie infested hellscapes. You’ll soon learn to fear what sounds like the cries of a lost child.
Resident Evil HD Remaster
The original Resident Evil released on the PlayStation One and instantly became a cult horror classic. Capcom released an HD remake of the game in 2015 for modern systems. The modern remake retains the same presentation featured in the original game. Some puzzles have been revised and there are additional explorable areas left out of the original release.
Telltale Games’ The Walking Dead
Platform: Every Platform Under the Sun, Seriously
Telltale Games may be no more, but their take on The Walking Dead revolutionized visual novel gaming. The first season is generally considered to be the best in the series, but all of the games are worth playing. The choices you make influence how characters behave towards you in later seasons.
State of Decay 2
This Microsoft-platform exclusive game focuses on surviving in a zombie infested world. Players must scaveng for items in a third-person view. The open world environment offers co-op gameplay with up to three other players. The game is available for free to Xbox gamers who have the Xbox Game Pass.
Dying Light is another game that puts emphasis on surviving in a zombie infested city. The parkour elements that are added to the game and more special infected coming out at night help create a unique atmospheric experience. The first time you’re caught outside at night without shelter will have you scrambling for the rooftops.
Resident Evil 2
Many Resident Evil fans consider Resident Evil 2 to be the penultimate title in the series. The remake was completely rebuilt from the ground up to utilize changes in the RE Engine. The result is a fantastic remake that fans will appreciate and newcomers will be terrified by.
This PS4 platform exclusive is set in post-apocalyptic Oregon two years after a zombie plague. Players assume the role of outlaw Deacon St. John as he heads down a dark path to find out what remains of his wife. The game features a very strong narrative and feels much like Red Dead Redemption to play.
The Last of Us
Another PS4 exclusive, The Last of Us deserves every single bit of critical acclaim it has gotten. Assume the role of Joel who meets Ellie and must guide her across a hellish post-apocalyptic landscape. The world has been consumed by a fungus that turns people into literal monsters.
