Disney+’s ‘Mighty Ducks’ reboot – everything we know so far

Disney knows it has a gold mine of original content for its streaming service, Disney+. And it’s exploiting it. The streamer has announced a ton of original films and shows based on Disney, Fox, and Marvel characters.

One of those is the reboot of ‘The Mighty Ducks,’ a reboot of the children’s film based on a hockey team. However, there’s relatively not much news about the show. Disney hasn’t even confirmed that the show is in development, but several reports have all but confirm it.

First, we know the production of the show will start in February in Vancouver for a first, ten-episode season. A temporary synopsis says it’s based on a kids hockey team that “will have a hidden talent that is initially viewed as a detriment. Only after being introduced to hockey and teamwork will they discover all of their hidden potential and flourish.” Also, the same reports confirmed the working breakdown of a couple of characters:

Adib ‘Sam’ Samitar is an 11-13-year-old Afro-American or Somali kid that is a master skateboarder, “The thrill-seeker rarely turns down a challenge, even deciding to befriend Evan after a violent collision on his trusty board. He joins the squad after realizing that he will be allowed to be a renegade.”

Jaden ‘Koob’ Koobler is an 11-13-year-old who is a heavyweight, he’s not an athletic kid ” but instead is a hardcore video game player whose skin is pale from long hours of marathon gaming in his downstairs man cave. Though he rarely breaks focus from his monitors, he proves to have an almost superhuman level of dexterity and reflexes that are worthy of a kung-fu master. Koob is wary of joining the squad and will need to be dragged out of his safe space.”

The lead character doesn’t have a name so far but it will be a 13-year-old that is kicked off the Mighty Ducks team, which leads his mother to help him take the first few steps to create his own team. There are no news of the cast nor how the reboot will directly relate to the original movie.

Steven Brill, Josh Goldsmith, Cathy Yuspa, George Heller and Brad Petrigala exec produce the series. Brill wrote the original 1992 film for Disney. The film was successful enough to deliver two sequels and an animated series in the 90s.
