Before Dwyane Wade was, well, the talented superstar he is, he started his journey in Harold L. Richards High School in Oak Park, Illinois. On the campus, he met Siohvaughn Funches who he eventually started dating and provided the future superstar a whiff of a home as his parents had separated when Wade was just four months old.
After high school, Wade attended Marquette University for two years. During his second season with the Marquette basketball team, he and Siohvaughn gave birth to their first son in Zaire in February of 2002 and eventually getting wed the same year. A year after that, he showed extreme skills that flaunted more than enough prowess to be drafted third overall in 2003 with the Miami Heat.
5 years later, they welcomed Zaya together but eventually splitting two years later saying that they had “irreconcilable differences.”
After the split, they both went their separate ways. Wade flourishing into the future Hall of Famer he is and Funches got her Bachelor’s of Science degree from Phoenix University and got her law degree from Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School. Not only that as she also has her doctorate in Theology and authors two books of the same genre: The True Story for God’s Glory: The Life of Siohvaughn L. Funches-Wade and You Gotta Let God Finish!
Along the way of their divorce, Wade sued Funches for falsely claiming he abused the children which Funches eventually took back. To add to that, Funches also accused of Wade cheating on her and leaving the family on their knees. Because of that, Wade claimed she was mentally unstable.
In 2011, Wade was then awarded sole custody of both their children. A year after that, Funches was arrested for attempting to abduct their children. It got that messy.
It was in that arrest that she was ordered to undergo a mental evaluation. When the divorce was still being observed, Wade eventually started dating Gabrielle Union. When the divorce settlement reached 2013, Wade paid Funches with $5 million, the mansion, and four cars.
Wade and Union dated in 2008 but broke up in 2013 for a brief time. A year later, they got married in Miami! A true fairytale for the Miami Heat star.
As the couple raised a blended family together, they went on a handful of headlines as their 12-year-old transgender daughter, Zaya, came out and the family accepted her wholeheartedly.
When speaking on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” Wade shared, “When our child comes home with a question, when our child comes home with an issue, when our child comes home with anything, it’s our job as parents to listen to that, to give them the best information that we can, the best feedback that we can,” he explained. “And that doesn’t change because sexuality is now involved in it.”
