Double World (2020)

This new Chinese release has all the elements of a classic Chinese fantasy-action flick. Set in the time of swords, one warlord creates an elaborate competition in order to find his best warriors.

We follow a young warrior competing in the games to bring honor to his clan. He will encounter monsters and gigantic scorpions of myth as he seeks to prove his metal.

All the action happens against a background of political intrigue, as powerful warrior kings vie against one another.

Based on the popular video game.

Errementari: The Blacksmith and the Devil (2018)

This intriguing fantasy horror is finding a much-deserved audience on Netflix. It is a Basque-language dark period fantasy that tells the story of a blacksmith that holds a demon in captivity for his own purposes.

Things start to go wrong for the blacksmith when a young girl befriends the demon and eventually releases it, letting it take its revenge.

The film is based on a Basque folk tale, recorded by anthropologist Father Joxemiel Barandiaran.

League of Gods (2016)

This Hong Kong-Chinese fantasy film stars Jet Li, which is a good indication of the kind of action you can expect.

Based on the 16th century Chinese novel by Feng Shen Yan Yi, we see the mythical Daji use her powers to raise King Zhou of Shang to the level of a tyrant.

A group of brave warriors must battle various mythological beasts in order to save their kingdom from his evil clutches.

The Old Guard (2020)

In a new Netflix Original released in 2020, Charlize Theron and Chiwetel Ejiofor star as part of a team of immortal mercenaries on a mission for revenge.

Now they are on a quest for revenge, while also avoiding being captured and used for scientific experiments.

Over the Moon (2020)

This is a Chinese-American computer-animated musical fantasy film – so it is fair to say that there is a lot going on.

The film follows a young girl who is inspired by the legend of the Moon goddess Change’s, who has a potion for immortality.

When her own mother falls ill and passes away, she decides to build a ship that will take her to the moon to find the legendary elixir.

But instead of heading to the moon, she finds herself pulled into a strange world, not dissimilar to Wonderland. But she may also be able to find what she is looking for here.

Project Power (2020)

Jamie Foxx, Joseph Gordon-Lovett, and Dominique Fishback star in this new superhero fantasy film from the Netflix Originals collection.

The film follows a drug dealer, a police officer, and a former soldier who find themselves in an unexpected alliance to stop the distribution of a pill that gives the user superpowers for five minutes.

They soon find themselves fighting both fringe dealers and big business to prevent the spread of this dangerous new self-enhancing pill.

Up Among the Stars (2018)

In this Spanish drama, we meet a former great filmmaker who has fallen on hard times after the death of his wife. With no more demand for his work, he is also struggling to support their son, and is dodging social services.

He uses his son as cast and crew to try and make crazy films that he is sure will reinvigorate his career, creating many fantasy worlds for the two to share.

But he soon realizes that the story he must tell is that of meeting and losing his wife. It is a story that he must tell the world, and his son.
