Golden Globes: Netflix bags 2 awards from 34 nominations

What a year it was for streaming, and the Golden Globes just proved that point. Unfortunately, Netflix received the short end of the stick despite racking up a record-setting number of nominations of 34. The streaming platform won 2: Olivia Coleman’s best actress win for The Crown and Laura Dern for best support actress in Marriage Story. Still dumbfounded by this, but The Irishman wasn’t even recognized during the awards. Sorry, Martin Scorsese.

On the other side of things, HBO max bagged four awards during the ceremony! They were heavily lead by Jesse Armstrong’s satirical comedy-drama, Succession, with two awards and Craig Mazin’s historical drama, Chernobyl, bagging also two awards.

Amazon Prime Video also won two prizes and to no surprise at all, Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s comedy-drama, Fleabag, was their breadwinner––winning Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy and Best Actress – Television Series Musical or Comedy.

Would you look at that, Hulu also won two awards! Patricia Arquette took home the supporting actress for Jeff Russo’s true crime drama, The Act, while Ramy Youssef won best actor for his OWN comedy, Ramy. Now that’s a feat I’ll have to add to my bucket list.

Apple TV+ also got the unlucky during the awards show. The platform was nominated for a couple of awards for The Morning Show, but was also unrecognized. During the show, Ricky Gervais took a shot at Apple saying: “Apple rolled into the TV game with a superb drama about the importance of dignity and doing the right thing, made by a company that runs sweatshops in China.”

With this, Netflix has to be aware that many of their counterparts are stepping up their games. The streaming giant may have a chance to shed light and erase these doubts on January’s Oscar nominations and their show on the 9th of February. This isn’t the image we see for Netflix, but we doubt this will continue. There’s a reason why it had 34 nominations, it’s just a matter of taste now. Nonetheless, this is a loss for Netflix, but let’s test the waters again soon.
