Isabela Merced has gained some mainstream attention after playing Dora the Explorer in the live-action film, ‘Dora and the City of Gold,’ which earned more than $60 million in the US, and more than $110 million worldwide. Now, she’ll have a new lead role, albeit a quite different one: she’ll play Jason Momoa’s daughter in the upcoming Netflix original revenge thriller, ‘Sweet Girl.’
Momoa will play “a devastated man who vows to bring justice to the people responsible for his wife’s death while protecting his daughter, who is the only family he has left.” The thriller will be Momoa’s second collaboration with Netflix, after the show ‘Frontier,’ which follows fur trade in Canada and the US in the 1700s. Gregg Hurwitz, Philip Eisner, and Will Staples wrote the script, and Brian Mendoza directs the movie. Momoa, Brad Peyton, and Jeff Pierson are the producers and Martin Kistler is the exec producer. The filming will take place in Pittsburgh.
It’s not exactly an innovative story but we’re talking about Jason freakin’ Momoa, who wouldn’t watch it? Moner seems like a solid bet. She is a former Nickelodeon teen star who played a lead role in ‘Transformers: The Last Knight’ alongside Mark Wahlberg, and lead the cast of ‘Sicario: Day of the Soldado’ with Benicio del Toro, so she’s no stranger to thrillers and action.
Aside from ‘Sweet Girl’ we’ll also see her soon in ‘Let It Snow,’ a teen rom-com based on the book by John Green, Maureen Johson, and Lauren Myracle. Is Merced a new young star in the making? 2020 seems promising for her. We’ll see.
