Here’s why Marriage Story’s Laura Dern deserved the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress

With the recent happenings during the Oscars, there is only one thing that we kind of expected to happen, and that’s Laura Dern.

The veteran actress has an impressive résumé and a flawlessly crafted career. Recently, she’s won the Golden Globes, Critics’ Choice, SAG Awards and the BAFTAs for her divorce attorney role in the Netflix hit Marriage Story. In fact, those who were nominated are some really tough competition with the likes of Scarlett Johansson for Jojo Rabbit, Margot Robbie for Bombshell, Florence Pugh for Little Women and Kathy Bates for Richard Jewell. If you got all four of those actresses in the same movie, you’d have to have at least 10 suits for every awards night you’d be going to.

However, let’s not veer away from the fact that Laura Dern is the talented actress we all know she is. Of course, she was nominated for Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story, but I’m pretty sure Oscars voters also took into account her roles in Little Women and Big Little Lies. Considering Hollywood isn’t kind to “older” actresses, Dern really proved that she has the credentials to back it up and the acting career everyone would aspire of. Just like in her Oscar speech, the audience would also like to thank her heroes, Bruce Dern and Diane Ladd, for molding such a beautiful human being.

Let’s talk Marriage Story now. There’s one particular scene that really showed THE Laura-Dern acting and if you’ve watched the movie, you know what I’m talking about. Disclaimer to all those who are just about to watch the movie, this will be a quick recap and a spoiler. There was a monologue before the ending where Dern, the divorce attorney, speaks up about the double standards of the patriarch and the matriarch of each family. Dern had something to say about it:

“As a woman, as an actor, to read this one particular monologue that Noah wrote for my character was like Christmas morning.”

Now that’s the kind of scene that goes through your heart and really respect the craft of both Baumbach and Dern, alongside the whole cast and crew of the film. Congratulations, Laura Dern! You definitely deserved that Oscar, you beautiful human being.
