Netflix’s new fantasy-anime movie, Ni no Kuni, should be played and not watched.

Ni no Kuni is coming to Netflix and I don’t actually know why.

To start things off, Ni no Kuni is a game published by Bandai Namco worldwide. At the helm of it all, we saw Level 5 in Japan develop and publish it. The game’s storyline revolves around the young Oliver and his quest to save his mother from the evils from another world.

The Level 5 production will be unassisted by Studio Ghibli, unlike its first game. The movie will be directed by Yoshiyuki Momose and is reported to be a dubbed version. That’s fun, I think. If it means it levelling to Cowboy Bebop, then I’m all for it.

The movie already launched in Japan back in August, and will be getting a Western adaptation which raises many eyebrows as to why it even needs one. The transition from game to movie may still be a hard pill to swallow for fans. If you’re a diehard fan of the game and its fondly story line, let’s just hope you’d like the movie the same way.

Remember when I said it was already released in Japan? Yeah, the movie was not as applaudable there as you might think. What more expectations should worldwide watchers set if in its own country, it failed. After it premiered in theatres, The Japan Times quickly reviewed it and boy, let me tell you, it did not go as planned for Level 5. The only check mark they got was their music, which was composed by Studio Ghibli’s Joe Hisaishi. Tough break.

Moving to Netflix may have seemed a little too desperate for Level 5. As we all know, Netflix is probably one of the best ways to keep your business afloat because of the massive audience possibly talking about your project. It doesn’t help that Netflix is very open to Asian entertainment now.

With Korean dramas and Japanese fantasy movies spearheading this brigade, maybe Ni no Kuni has a chance. Against other movies though and the fear of comparison, there are many other animations out there to soothe you.

Hopefully, I get to be proven wrong. As Ni no Kuni will be dropping on the 16th of January 2020.

  1. It’s actually an okay movie. there are a few nice nods. I do however feel like a bit of it was cheesy. But a good endearing type of cheese. I’d recommend, if you have netflix and just wanna watch it.
