Netflix orders ‘The Midnight Gospel’ from ‘Adventure Time’ creator

Netflix has ordered “The Midnight Gospel,” an animated show from Pendleton Ward, the Adventure Time creator, and comedian Duncan Trussell. The show is set to premiere on the streaming platform in 2020.

Ward and Trussell will exec produce the eight-episode animated series set in a fantastical universe based on the interviews Trussell conducts in his podcast, “Duncan Trussell Family Hour.” Titmouse Animation is the producing studio. Titmouse is behind one of Netflix’s major animation shows, Big Mouth.

The series will follow Clancy, “a spacecaster with a malfunctioning multiverse simulator [who] leaves the comfort of his home to interview beings living in dying worlds,” per Netflix’s working synopsis.

Ward created Cartoon Network’s ‘Adventure Time,’ which ran for 10 successful seasons. However, that wasn’t the last go for the show, as Ward will also produce a limited series revival for the show for HBO Max called ‘Adventure Time: Distant Lands.’

Trussell is a seasoned comedy writer. His works include “This Is Not Happening,” “Pretend Time,” the 2011 MTV Movie Awards, and “Funny or Die Presents…” He worked with Ward as a voice actor in Adventure Time, and also has done voice work in HBO’s “Animals,” Cartoon Network’s “Aqua Teen Hunger Force,” and more. His “Duncan Trussell Family Hour” podcast is an interview-based show featuring guests such as Dan Harmon, the creator of ‘Community’ and co-creator of ‘Rick and Morty,’ Dr. Drew, and occult writer, Mitch Horowitz.

Netflix continues bolstering its animated offer after greenlighting three Masters of the Universe-based animated shows and striking a large deal with Nickelodeon for fresh animated content for the platform.
