Netflix’s The Witcher has been renewed for a second season

We’re still more than a month away from ‘The Witcher’ Season 1 premiere and Netflix has already confirmed Season 2. Considering the budget Netflix has given to ‘the Witcher’ to turn it into its own ‘Game of Thrones,’ the news isn’t surprising.

But, generally, a network would’ve waited after the premiere to make the announcement. It seems Netflix is happy enough with what it has seen from Season 1 to greenlight the second season a month before its premiere.

They made the announcement via Twitter:

Netlix has already ordered a second season of The Witcher. The first season of the show, starring Henvil Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, hasn’t even aired yet.

First announced in 2017, the series is based on the original saga by Andrzej Sapkowski, which already saw a successful videogame adaptation. The series will explore stories from the book with some nods to the role-playing-games. The eight-episode Season 1 will premiere on December 20. The Witcher stars Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, Anya Chalotra as Yennefer, and Freya Allan as Ciri.

Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich said of the announcement: “I am so excited that before viewers dive into season one, we are already able to confirm that we’ll be returning to The Continent again to continue telling the stories of Geralt, Yennefer and Ciri, and to showcase more of the amazing work that our cast and crew have delivered.”

Season 2 production will start in London somewhere in the first couple of months next year, aiming to an early 2021 release for Season 2.
