Phoebe Waller-Bridge To Sign a Three-Year Exclusivity Deal with Amazon Prime Video

Phoebe Waller-Bridge was one of the stars of last weekend’s Emmy Awards. Her Amazon Prime Video show, ‘Fleabag’ won three of the major comedy prizes: Best Actress in a Comedy Series, Best Writing for a Comedy Series and, of course, Best Comedy Series. Waller-Bridge’s other show, ‘Killing Eve’ also won a couple of awards.

Now Amazon Prime Video wants her to continue her role. They have reportedly tabbed Waller-Bridge to an exclusivity deal, said to be for three years and of more than $20 million.

This exclusivity deals are increasingly common and streaming services are competing hard to get them. Netflix signed one with Ryan Murphy for $300 million, with Shonda Rhimes for $150 million, and with ‘Game of Thrones’ masterminds David Benioff and D.B. Weiss for $250 million. WarnerMedia didn’t want HBO Max to be left behind and signed their own exclusivity deal with J.J. Abrams for $250 million.

Considering that many entertainment companies and networks are about to launch their own streaming services (WarnerMedia will launch HBO Max; NBCUniversal, Peacock; Apple, Apple+; Disney, Disney+) we’ll probably see more of these type of deals quite soon.

Amazon Prime Video’s deal with Phoebe Waller-Bridge is the first major deal of this kind they sign. Talking to Variety, the Fleabag creator said that working on the show was a “creative partnership dreams are made of.”

“It really feels like home,” she said. “I can’t wait to get going!” This one seems like a sure bet for Amazon Prime Video, we’ll see what other enticing projects will Waller-Bridge offer us with Amazon.
