Amazon Prime Video tests its internal production pipeline with “Youth”

Youth is a comic book produced by comiXology Originals, a printer of Amazon’s digital comics. Amazon Studios is considering adapting the comic’s story to its streaming platform. This would be the first time the company looks inward to producing original content from Amazon Prime.

The plot of Youth tells the story of Franklin and River, a young queer couple, who escape from the small community where they lived after stealing River’s stepfather’s Ford Mustang to go to California. Along the way, they run into another teenage couple who are looking for their own way out as well.

After an unfortunate end to a party, the teenage quartet gets caught up in a highway disaster that slowly complicates the plot, involving superpowers, aliens and secret government agencies.

The comic is written by Curt Pires, a writer and producer who spends his time between Calgary and Hollywood. Pires has already written other works for Dark Horse, Image Comics and Boom! Studios. Five of Curt’s eight works are already on their way to being adapted for film and television, so it’s no surprise that Amazon Studios is moving this piece.

There is still very little information on the details of possible adaptation. In fact, the comic book hasn’t even been released yet. So we’ll have to wait a bit to see how the project develops.

What’s really important about this possibility is that it gives us a hint of a comics-to-screens pipeline that Amazon could adjust according to your needs. This would undoubtedly be an advantage over many other streaming platforms.
