Apple TV+ premiered at the beginning of the month with only a handful of original content. This means we have almost-daily updates of streamer’s incoming original content. Yesterday, they gave us a sneak peek at ‘Servant,’ its incoming psychological trailer created and directed by renowned filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan.
The first four original shows that aired from November 1 had mixed reviews, but Shyamalan’s show seems poised to stir things up.
Airing on November 28th, ‘Servant’ follows “a Philadelphia couple in mourning after an unspeakable tragedy,” which creates a “rift in their marriage and opens the door for a mysterious force to enter their home.” In the trailer, we see that the couple (portrayed by Toby Kebbell and Lauren Ambrose) lost their 13-week-old child and replaced it with a remarkably imitative doll, and hired a nanny to take care of it. The cast is completed by Nell Tiger Free (Game of Thrones), and Rupert Grint, who is better remembered for playing Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter saga.
Even though Shyamalan didn’t write the show, it certainly seems it perfectly fits the unsettling style that most of his films, such as ‘The Sixth Sense,’ and ‘Split’ usually have. He directs the series alongside creator, exec producer, and writer Tony Basgallop (who’s been behind ’24: Live Another Day,’ and ‘Inside Men’). ‘Servant’ is Shyamalan return to TV after his Fox thriller show, ‘Wayward Pines.’ He’s trying to bounce back from the generalized disappointment critics and fans felt with ‘Glass,’ his latest film.
