‘The Perfect Weapon’: HBO starts the production of a doc about cyberwarfare

HBO is starting the production of a documentary film that will analyze the state of cyberwarfare as the US inches closer to the 2020 election.

‘The Perfect Weapon’ comes from director and exec producer John Maggio, who’s helmed films such as ‘Panic: The Untold Story of the 2008 Financial Crisis’, and ‘The Newspaperman.’ The docufilm is based on David E. Sanger’s bestseller. Sanger is the New York Times’ national security correspondent.

It will follow the premise of the rise of cyberwarfare as one of the most significant ways antagonizing nations compete and sabotage each other. With the reports of Russian meddling in the 2016 elections, there’s some fear that there could be potential cyber-attacks that affect the results of the 2020 elections in the country. The documentary will show us interviews with high-ranking military and intelligence officials in the US and reporting from the first lines of cyber warfare.

‘The Perfect Weapon’ is produced by Ark Media, the production business led by Maggio, Barak Goodman, and Rachel Dretzin. The production house has already headed interesting projects such as ‘Panic’ and ‘Finding your Roots.’

The film will join a robust roster of recent HBO original documentaries such as the Emmy Award Winner and quite controversial, ‘Leaving Neverland,’ ‘The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley,’ ‘At the Heart of Gold,’ ‘Liberty: Mother of Exiles,’ ‘The Case Against Adnan Syed’ and, most recently, ‘Very Ralph.’

HBO is aiming towards a 2020 release, which, in all likelihood, will be in the second semester of the year.
