Netflix has finally announced the release date of its most expected show of the year. ‘The Witcher’ will premiere on the streaming service on Friday, December 20. The streamer finally confirmed the date after a ton of speculation due to a leak in September. In the leak, the referred release date was December 17, which means the date was later changed.
The show stars Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, Freya Allan as Ciri, and Anya Chalotra as Yennefer. ‘The Witcher’ is based on the book series of the same name written by Andrzej Sapkowski that have a quite famous video game adaptation, too.
The series is set in a fictional world called the Continent, populated by humans and fantastic creatures such as elves, gnomes, dwarves, and monsters. The Continent is divided into two regions: the south, governed by the Nilfgaard Empire, and the north, which has a variety of kings. It follows the story of Geralt, a member of an order of mystically trained men called witchers that hunt monsters, as he travels the world and is caught in different confrontations and fights against humans and monsters.
The showrunner will be Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, who has previously produced shows such as ‘The Umbrella Academy,’ ‘Daredevil,’ and ‘The West Wing.’
The two-minute trailer reveals a bit more than the first one, showing us new monsters that haunt The Continent, of Geralt relationship with Yennefer and Ciri, and some Game of Thrones-level battles. After initial mixed-reviews, Henry Cavill looks perfect as Geralt of Rivia.
